Lillian-Grace Misko is the 2011 Missouri State Honey Queen and in this role she’s traveled all over the state of Missouri on behalf of bees, beekeepers, and honey educating and enriching people’s lives.

But she’s also a college student, a devout Christian, a dancer, a daughter, and a sister to half a dozen siblings.

And she never seems to stop smiling.

Although keeping bees, studying the bible, and teaching an exercise/dance class seem distant and disconnected, the more time one spends with Lillian the more these distinct parts of her life seem to bleed into one another.

The Claremont High cross country team began referring to themselves as CCCP (Claremont Cross Country People) back in the late 80′s before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The name resurfaced around 2000 when Rob Lander, an original member of the Claremont team from the late 80′s who coined the name and helped lead the team to it’s first state meet, returned to Claremont as an assistant coach in 1998.

A few years ago he took the reigns as head coach and after a few rocky seasons found his groove. Last year the boys team finished fourth in state and in 2010 they were hoping to win. After an exceptional finish at the legendary Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitation (first in Division II Boys Sweepstakes) the press that covers high school cross country started to take notice. They dominated CIF prelims and finished third at CIF finals qualifying for state.

Although it was their second appearance at the state meet in two years, the boys were still incredibly nervous; but that didn’t stop them from goofing around the day before the race. When the gun finally went off their focus snapped into place and they were all business. For many on the team it was the last race of their high school career and for a couple it was their first taste. They ran their hearts out, many setting personal bests, and finished third overall. But that’s nothing to frown at and Coach Rob couldn’t have been more pleased to see his team reap the rewards of their labor.

Although the seasonal hunt reached it’s peak in the mid ’70s with 5.2 million animals killed in 1976, raccoon hunting is still practiced on a smaller scale in the United States.

The annual harvest in rural Missouri can be a race against the clock and this year is no different. Spike Rowe, who cash farms corn and beans on 2,000 acres in Macon County, is in a mad dash this season (his 15th) to harvest as much as he can before the onslaught of Autumn’s rain and snow.

With only the help of his younger brother, Spike will harvest and transfer up to 6,000 bushels of grain a day from his fields to either Macon’s MFA grain elevator or a private bin he rents from a neighboring farm to store until Spring.

The work day during the harvest starts early in the day and often extends deep into the evening; it’s not uncommon for Spike to not see his daughters for days and only see his wife as he crawls into bed.
